The Loyola Academy Ramblers earned the highest national ranking of any Illinois lacrosse team to date in the US Lacrosse National rankings, taking No. 15 in the 2017 season rankings. The prior rankings never had any Illinois team higher than the low twenties. Coupled with this honor was Brennan Dwyer being named for the second consecutive year, the Epoch/USLacrosse Midwest Player of the Year. Loyola was also ranked No. 4 by MaxPreps and No. 14 by Toplaxrecruits/Summit National Rankings, as well as the No. 1 team in the Midwest by US Lacrosse..
Illinois US Lacrosse All-Americans
This was a game of two halves, a game won by adjustments made at halftime as Loyola was unable to pull away from New Trier in the first half and led by a narrow 7-6 advantage. Although Loyola opened the game with two quick scores in the first four minutes to lead 2-0, New Trier refused to let them enlarge their lead, coming back to tie the game at 2-2, 3-3 and 4-4 by the middle of the first half. The Ramblers pulled away 7-4 at 7:31, and were looking to make it 8-4, but received their second yellow card at 1:38 on hard charge to the goal, as well as having the goal waved off. The Trevians took advantage of this miscue and executed two perfect extra man offensive sets to score at 1:20 and 1:07, so instead of a four goal lead, the Ramblers led by only one. Loyola managed to stem the bleeding and maintain possession to run out the half.
The teams traded goals in the first half and the Red Devils taking 5-4 lead. Glenbrook South forced the issue in the waning minutes of the half, when Greer Bireley converted a free position to the left of Hinsdale`s keeper, Kelsie Chisholm to tie the game at 5-5 at 2:11. Hinsdale won the draw, pushed downfield and was awarded a free position in which Sydney Collignon pushed through a pinch byTitan defenders Kate Brennan and Lila Frick to regain the lead, 6-5 and prevail by one with 1:21 left. Glenbrook won the draw and Lindsay Karsh moved the ball up top to Bireley, who moved into the right half of the eight. Three closest Hinsdale defenders, Shea Draddy, Allegra Duggan and Maria Mulvihill, pinched together and Bireley was forced to use a jump shot which Chisholm stuffed along the right pipe at 0:25.6 to preserve the one goal lead into half.
Congratulations to the 2017 All-State Selections.
